Date Night @ Q Halal Chicken (Alameda)

One of my favorite things to do to for “stay in town” date night is to drive to Alameda. I love the Norman Rockwell-esque feel of this quiet sleepy town (at least in my mind). The City of Alameda (which is also an island) is only about 15 minutes away from our house but it feels like a totally different place compared to San Francisco and Oakland. I love sitting on the passenger seat while my guy drives, and just enjoy riding under the cool canopy of stately trees and looking at old Victorians dating back to the 1800s. Downtown Alameda has old fashioned soda fountains, diners, a movie theatre as well as a number of wine bars and restaurants.

I read about a “great"  Mediterranean place in Downtown Alameda which we were excited to try. I was expecting a grungy hole-in-the-wall but it turned out to be a nice and modern restaurant worthy of a casual date night. It was a lovely day so we opted to sit at the patio surrounded by gerbera daisies. It was also perfect for people watching – Alameda movie theatre and a wine bar were just across the street.

Let me just say that the most exciting part of our evening was the drive thru Alameda. Having eaten so many Mediterranean meals lately, our experience was just so-so. The plates were massive and enough for two meals (at least for a smaller person like me). Since the dishes were fairly cheap ($10!) for a kabob plate with salad, bread, yogurt and chutney sauces, and basmati rice, we did not hold back:

  • Shami Kabob (minced beef on skewers) for my guy
  • Gyro Meal with Fries for him as well. (Yup, he can eat!)
  • Chicken Kabob for me with an extra order of criss-cross fries

The meats were dry, bland and lacking the spices that Afghan dishes are known for. I did not even bother to take my leftovers home. They were not bad but unmemorable. Q’s would have been great as an average weekday lunch spot. Yelpers rave about Q’s. Maybe the chef took a day off.

$43 including tip and soda

A really nice relaxing date night.

Just okay.  ♡ ♡ ♡
