Loco moco

While vacationing in Oahu last year, I made sure to eat Loco Moco during my trip. Loco Moco is one of my all-time favorite comfort food. The legend of Loco Moco says that this dish was first served in Hilo, Hawaii in 1949 to satisfy the big appetites of hungry broke teenagers who needed food ASAP. Loco Moco was invented as a Hawaiian comfort food classic and has gone mainstream. This dish is really simple yet so satisfying. Burger is placed on top of steamed white rice which is then smothered with rich, brown gravy and finished with a fried egg.

Looking at our travel pictures in Oahu last September 2019, I was hit with a big craving for Loco Moco and decided to learn how to make it. The burger and rice part were really very easy. I did struggle, though, with finding the gravy recipe that I like. I tried two recipes online that used cornstarch as thickener. I did not like the texture as it is not what I am used to whenever I ordered this dish at restaurants. The third gravy recipe that I tried used flour and bam! That’s it! That was the consistency that I prefer.

I have made this three times already for Mr Sweetie and he just loves it. Mr Sweetie has ties to Hawaii in his previous life and approves of my Loco Moco. This recipe is tried and true as all of my recipes on my blog. Loco Moco is really a simple recipe that should not be overthought. (Please see my notes below as well.) It is one of those ultimate comfort food that fills you up with carbs from the rice, protein, savory sauce and runny yolk. (Sounds divine, right?!) Please let me know if you make this recipe.



  • 2 (4 ounce) patties ground beef
  • 1 pinch salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and pinch of garlic powder (both optional)
  • 1/2 tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) or any neutral oil such as vegetable oil


  • 1 1/2 cups low sodium beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1/2 medium sized sweet onion, minced
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons minced green onions (optional, for garnish)


  • 2 eggs (fried sunny side-up)
  • Steamed rice (cook according to package direction)


  1. Season patties with salt and pepper. (And garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce, if using.)
  2. Add 1/2 tbps EVOO in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patty in the hot skillet until a browned crust forms on the bottom, about 5 minutes. Flip and cook the other side until patties are browned, 4 to 5 minutes more. Remove patty to a plate.
  3. Lower the heat to medium. Scrape up browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Melt butter in the same skillet the burgers were cooked in. Cook minced onions until brown and tender. Add flour to the pan drippings and allow it to cook for 30-60 seconds. Pour about a half cup of the broth until well blended. Add the remaining broth. Add soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce and ketchup.
  4. Reduce heat to low until thickened, about 3-5 minutes.Reserve gravy until needed.
  5. Fry eggs on a separate skillet sunny-side up style until whites are set and yolks are still runny.


  1. Divide rice between two plates.
  2. Place burger patties over the rice.
  3. Spoon gravy on top.
  4. Add the fried eggs.


  • Do not try to make the gravy with chicken broth. I tried it and it does not work! Beef broth is the only way to go. (I have not tried vegetable broth. Please let me know if you make it using vegetable broth instead of beef.)
  • I found the broth too salty when I used regular beef broth. If you use regular instead of low-sodium, please adjust the amount of soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce before adding it to the gravy by tasting the gravy first. If using low-sodium beef broth, the amounts of the soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce that I included on this recipe is perfect.

VEGAN VERSION: I also used Impossible Meat the first time I made it (with beef broth and eggs). It was good! I am not a fan of Impossible Meat, though. I prefer real beef as I hardly eat it anyway. However, it is possible to make a vegan version of Loco Moco by omitting the butter and eggs, and by using vegetable broth and plant-based patties. I can imagine it still being very delicious and comforting. Please let me know if you try this.

  1. Your loco moco looks divine! Rice, burger patties, eggs and gravy in one dish is the ultimate comfort food! I’ve not tasted Impossible Meat yet, although it’s available here. Instead, I tend to choose other plant-based substitutes such as mushrooms and potatoes for burger patties in veggie meals 🙂

    • My friends really like Impossible Meat and told me that it tastes like real beef. Not to me. The look and texture look and feel like beef but it has an aftertaste. It does not taste like beef at all. I am still glad that I tried it, though! It did not taste bad at all. 🙂 I love other plant-based products as well like the vegan sausages from Trader Joe’s.
